Oolitic, Ind., July 23, 2015 – For the second consecutive year, Indiana Limestone Company’s intense efforts to meet customer needs have produced exceptional availability of the firm’s prized buff stone.

This appealing, coveted building material continues to be produced along with all other traditional limestone varieties at ILCO’s central Indiana quarries. According to company COO Duffe Elkins, buff stone was delivered in the substantial quantities necessary to meet heavy demand in 2014, and that trend continues this year.

“It’s important to understand that quarrying is a seasonal operation,” said Regional Manager Craig Alwine. “Buff stone is absolutely available. If it’s to be delivered in February when quarrying is shut down for the winter, then it’s wise to plan purchases ahead of time and procure it sooner.”

Alwine said ILCO’s commitment to sustainable and responsible quarrying means that the firm will never sacrifice environmental standards in favor of production increases. To an extent, the pace of quarrying is governed by the firm’s ability to extract stone from top to bottom of the stone deposit and fully reclaim the land when quarrying is complete.

Historically, the output of ILCO’s quarries has averaged about one-third buff limestone, one-third gray and one-third full-color blend. Proven reserves of all stone at ILCO quarries, Elkins said, amount to 100 years’ worth of quarrying; actual reserves are thought to be much larger than that. Consequently, the supply of buff limestone – and all Indiana limestone – will remain reliable far into the future.
