Indiana Limestone Co. has moved its corporate office to the former downtown law office of Ken Nunn, within a stone’s throw of a premier showcase for their native limestone.

In relocating from its offices in Oolitic to the building at 123 S. College Ave., Indiana Limestone Co. aims to provide a more professional environment near the backdrop of limestone buildings throughout the Indiana University campus and downtown Bloomington.

The move is part of a greater story of organic expansion and acquisition over the past 18 months, according to Indiana Limestone Co.’s chief operating officer Duffe Elkins.

“It’s hard to have a professional atmosphere when you’re next to a quarry,” said Elkins, noting that dust and heavy machinery haven’t been conducive for business meetings. “That office was built right next to the plant; it’s difficult with noise and dust when you’re running full tilt during the season.”

Indiana Limestone Co. faced Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year and owed $50 million to more than 1,000 creditors, according to a Herald-Times article of May 14, 2015. After the Chicago-based equity firm Wynnchurch Capital bought the quarrier and fabricator for $26 million, the company sought to relocate and expand for more than a year.

“We’ve been through some tougher times in the past few years, and this goes to show that we’re alive and well, and woven into the fabric of Bloomington,” said Elkins. “I think that when the company went through an ownership change, the desire of the new ownership was that they have a different corporate office setup.”

The new, larger location has resulted in the relocation of 90 percent of the workforce from the Oolitic offices, which now will be used for training and less-frequent business meetings. Aside from conducting meetings without the interruptions of dust and a busy industrial backdrop, the new location provides ample parking for the nearly 20 employees, consistent traffic, accessibility and the opportunity to provide in-person examples for potential customers.

The 6,000-square-foot building that is now home to Indiana Limestone Co. was built by attorney and current property owner Ken Nunn to serve as his primary law office from 1983 to 2005. Nunn has since opened a new location for his offices near Ind. 37 and has used the previous downtown location for storage the past 10 years.

“It certainly is an empty spot in the community now occupied, and it’s occupied by a first-class corporation,” said Nunn. “A building has to be comfortable, and it has to be good to you. That building made my business grow phenomenally. It boosted my own personal feeling of going to the office because it was a joy.”

According to an Indiana Limestone news release, the relocation will be completed this month.

“There needed to be a closer connection between Bloomington, Monroe County and Indiana Limestone Co.,” said Elkins. “The opportunity, the timing was just right.”
